When it comes to breakfast + brunch, I almost always choose a savory option over a sweet one. Show me a menu full of delicious-sounding pancakes + french toast? I’ll hop down to the omelettes + quiches, where I’ll choose something that sounds even tastier. There *is* one thing that can make me wander to the sweet side, though — a truly scrumptious coffee cake. This stems from my childhood, when my parents would start the weekend by picking up amazing New England bagels + my favorite breakfast treat — a sour cream chocolate chip coffee cake.
I hadn’t thought about that coffee cake in years, until I had some sour cream in the fridge to use up + stumbled across a sour cream coffee cake recipe. Suddenly, i remembered that treat from my childhood + had to recreate it. I found a recipe, gathered the ingredients, + was so excited that I couldn’t wait til the morning to make it, so I began baking it at 10 PM that evening. As it was baking, I knew i was onto something fab – it already smelled like that coffee cake I loved so much – I couldn’t wait to sample it.
So, how was it? Absolutely, positively delicious. I’ve eaten an insane amount of this coffee cake in the mere 3 days since I baked it. It makes for a delicious breakfast, a perfect afternoon snack, or a wonderful after-dinner sweet. The cake is buttery + flavorful, while the chocolate/ cinnamon-sugar ribbon is rich + decadent. And my favorite part? The divine cinnamon-sugar crumble topping, intermingled with cinnamon-sugar coated chocolate chips. Holy deliciousness! If you’re looking for a serious crowd-pleaser for your next breakfast or brunch, look no further!
Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake
makes about 9 servings, adapted from two peas + their pod
ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
2 large eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chocolate chipscinnamon-sugar topping/filling:
1/2 cup granulated sugar
6 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamondirections
preheat the oven to 350°. butter an 8-inch square baking pan + set aside.
in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, + salt. set aside.
using an electric mixer or a stand mixer, cream together the butter + 1 cup sugar until fluffy, about 5 minutes. add in the eggs, one at a time, + beat until smooth. beat in the sour cream + vanilla extract. mix until well combined.
slowly add in the dry flour mixture. mix until just combined. in a separate small bowl, make the cinnamon-sugar topping/filling, by whisking together sugar, brown sugar, + cinnamon.
prepare the coffee cake: pour half the batter into the prepared cake pan, then sprinkle with half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture + half of the chocolate chips. spread the remaining batter over the filling, spreading gently. top with the remaining chocolate chips + cinnamon-sugar mixture.
bake until the top is golden + a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 40-50 minutes. cool to room temperature + serve.

I absolutely adore coffee cake. We used buy the huge pies from Costco and I’d bring a slice for breakfast every morning to school. The crumb topping is to die for. This is going on my to make list, asap! Is it possible to put this in your suitcase for Saturday? 😉 jk
ha! if i wasn’t confident that it would be completely gone by saturday, i’d definitely smuggle a piece in my suitcase to share with you this weekend. too funny!
This sounds delightful! I will definitely have to give it a try one of these days. I love the chocolate chip and cinnamon combo.
i had forgotten how much i love the chocolate chip/cinnamon combination – it’s absolutely delightful, especially on the crumble on top, when the choco chips get coated in cinnamon/sugar. it gives them a wonderful texture + flavor. yum!
This looks so good, now you have me craving coffee cake instead of my banana and walnuts that I brought with me for a snack.
I might be making some coffee cake soon!
i hear ya! all my healthy snacks for the past few days have been pushed aside in favor of a slice of this. whoops! =) it really is crazy addictive.
Coffee cake is one of my all time breakfast (or anytime) treats! My grandmother use to make it all the time. Although, I don’t think I’ve ever had one with sour cream…. I think I’ll be making this today!
it’s awesome, julie! the sour cream flavor doesn’t come through much – it mostly adds moisture + maybe just a hint on tang. you could probably substitute plain or greek yogurt if you were low on sour cream, too. hope it turns out delicious for you!
I’m definitely a sweets-for-breakfast kinda gal (although I do like to supplement with at least some protein!), and coffee cake is one of my favorites. Hmmm, I’ve got some cinnamon chips I need to use up; I might toss some of those into this for a weekend breakfast treat! Looks wonderful, as always.
it would be awesome with cinnamon chips mixed in with the chocolate chips, or even just with cinnamon chips. personally, i love the chocolate, so i’d go for a mix, but either would be great. hope it turns out wonderful for you!
Ditto, I prefer more savory than sweet for breakfast but I can’t resist the combo of sour cream & chocolate. And I love how this is sort of a layer cake. That’s unique for a coffee cake. It’s my Sunday to bring a breakfast treat for our couples small group at church – I’m sold on your cake! Love it, Amy – thank you!
from the original recipe, i doubled the cinnamon-sugar mixture for the ribbon/crumble topping + nearly doubled the chocolate chips because i wanted a prominent ribbon that would give it more of a layer-cake feel + a nice, tall topping. for me, that’s what makes it a bit different (+ more decadent) than your everyday coffee cake. =) hope it turns out wonderful for your church group on sunday, ally!
Oh, I know very well those baking-crazy moments when we just can’t wait any further, and I imagine that lovely coffee smell lingering in the air at midnight, am I right?
Your cake looks just delicious (and I like that plate as well!)
ha, you are sooo right! in fact, even though i made the coffee cake 3 days ago, the delicious cinnamony, buttery smell lingered in the house until yesterday. no complaints here! oh, + the plate was a wedding gift – we got a set of antique dessert plates. aren’t they lovely? thanks for your kind words, katia!
This looks so yummy. This would be a perfect dish to make if you have company staying over. I’m definitely making it when my in-laws come to town. That way they have something to nibble on while drinking their coffee. Of course, I could also make it for myself:) Thanks for sharing the recipe.
it’s definitely great for when you have guests over, because it’s just as tasty for breakfast as it is for an afternoon pick-me-up with coffee or tea. plus, i actually prefer it at room temperature to warm out of the oven, which means you don’t have to worry about re-warming pieces every time someone wants some. i hope your in-laws (+ you) love it!
Coffee cake is freakin’ awesome as is, now with the addition of chocolate chips it’s like the best thing in the entire world. Yum!!!
i couldn’t agree more! the chocolate chips definitely move this coffee cake from the ‘tasty’ category to the ‘insanely delicious’ category. chocolate is awesome in its ability to do that to a recipe. =)
Very nice. The chocolate chips take this from a brunch to dinner dessert in one chocolate sweep.
the chocolate chips definitely make it versatile — personally, i think i like it best as an afternoon sweet, with a cup of tea, although it’s awesome as a brunch dish or a dessert, too. i’ve had it as all three within the last few days. =) i love sweets that are versatile like that!
Wish I had your afternoon snack right now Looks super delicious!!
if you lived closer, i’d gladly share some coffee cake + tea with you. =)
looks fabulous!!
thanks so much, alison! it tasted fabulous, too =)
This looks really good. I am in the mood for a coffee cake. I was thinking either blueberry or raspberry but I may change my mind and make this next time. Thanks for sharing.
ooh, a blueberry or raspberry (or a combination of both) would be awesome, too! thanks for stopping by my blog!
OK, this is one that I definitely plan to make sometime in the future!! I love coffee cake, and I love the addition of chocolate chips! Yum!
i think you’ll love it, kristen! the coffee cake is delicious by itself, but the chocolate chips totally put it over the top in terms of deliciousness + decadence. enjoy!

i will absolutely go check it out – thanks for the heads-up, wendy!
Crumb cake with chocolate. Oh. My. Goodness. Brew a pot of coffee and bring it on! Heavens this looks delicious.
nothing would make me happier than having you over for a cup of coffee + a slice of coffee cake. =) if we ever live closer together, it’s happening!
Oh.Em.Gee! I love cakes, cupcakes & pancakes but coffee cake is officially my favorite kind of cake ever!
isn’t coffee cake the yummiest?! you’ll definitely have to give this one a try!
Oh yumm, coffee cake is one of my weaknesses, but how fabulous to add chocolate too! You rock 😉
you are too sweet, steph! =) the chocolate definitely steps it up a bit in terms of super deliciousness – no doubt about that!
I always battle between sweet and savory breakfast – savory mostly wins but I give into sweet breakfasts here and there. This coffee cake would DEF win that battle. Looks delicious!
savory almost always wins for me, too, except when something super delicious like this comes across as an option. =)
holy yum! this looks amazing. i just love sour cream + coffee cake! bookmarking this one!
yay! hope you try it out + love it. it makes a good amount of coffee cake, so it’s especially good for a group, which is great someone who entertains a lot like you!
This looks fantastic! Picture reminds me of the Entemanns chocolate chip cake but yours looks so much better – and its a coffee cake too. You are so evil posting this. Bookmarking for future baking!
ha! i will warn you that once you have it baked + sitting on your counter at home, it’s seriously tempting. i’ve eaten waaay more of it than is probably appropriate over the last few days. totally worth it, though – it’s delicious!
I love coffee cake but never make it. I just never think of it. This is definitely going in my to-do box. No, this is going to be printed out and stuck on my fridge.
honestly, i never think of it either! if i hadn’t been browsing the internet, looking up ways to use up the rest of my sour cream, i wouldn’t have stumbled across this fab recipe. can’t wait for you to try it – it is delicious!
I too love savoury stuff for breakfast/brunch. The cake looks great and your wonderful click is making it look even more fab.
I know what you mean by that “divine” cinnamon-sugar crumble topping. Growing up, my mom would make a coffee cake with a similar crumble and pieces of Heath Bar. As much as I like that coffee cake recipe, I have been wanting to try something new. This recipe is perfect!
awesome, leandra! do let me know how it turns out for you. your mom’s version with the heath bar sounds divine, by the way. i love toffee in anything, so i bet i’d love that coffee cake!
I love coffee cake (so does my 6 year old). This looks great, I love the chocolate chips in there! Sounds moist and perfect for a brunch (I don’t like eggs, so I am all about the sweets)
that’s one of the things i liked most about this coffee cake – while it’s definitely a crowd pleaser with the foodies + the adults, it’s super kiddo-friendly, too. chocolate chips are a great unifying force like that! =)
I made this yesterday and OMG….it is so good….and almost gone for that matter because we can’t stop eating it. This will definitely be one of my go-to easy breakfast items!
