i don’t know about y’all, but i’m a snacker. i know there are people who only eat 3 times a day – breakfast, lunch, + dinner – but i am NOT one of those people. in addition to those three meals, i usually have a morning snack, an afternoon snack, + sometimes, a late-night snack. while it’s easy to reach for junk food (+ yes, occasionally i do), i feel better + more energized when i eat snacks with some healthy attributes – high protein, high fiber, heart-healthy fats, etc.
i love hummus as a snack, + much prefer homemade versions to store-bought ones. it seems like every homemade version i’ve had, whether it’s from a friend or a restaurant, is unique, which i love. so, last week, i decided to try making it myself. how did it turn out? wonderful! i adored how easy it was to make, coming together in less than 5 minutes. due to the easy preparation AND the delicious results, i made it for a potluck on Thursday, + again for a Superbowl party on Sunday. + of course, i kept a generous amount for myself … which i’ve been snacking on nonstop for the last few days. =)
Simple Homemade Hummus
makes about 4 cups, adapted from Gourmet Magazine, via epicurious
ingredients
3 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon salt
two 16 oz. cans chickpeas/garbanzo beans, drained + rinsed
2/3 cup well-stirred tahini
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, or to taste
1/4 cup olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
a pinch of paprika, for garnishaccompaniment: toasted pita triangles
directions
on a cutting board, mince + mash the garlic to a paste with the salt.
in a food processor purée the chickpeas with the garlic paste, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, + 1/2 cup water, scraping down the sides, until the hummus is smooth. add salt to taste. add water, if necessary, to thin the hummus to the desired consistency + transfer the hummus to a bowl.
the hummus may be made 3 days in advance + kept covered + chilled. when ready to serve, divide the hummus between shallow serving dishes. drizzle the hummus with extra olive oil, sprinkle with paprika, + serve with toasted pita.

Gotta love a good hummus. Yum!
I’m so with you on the snacking. I don’t understand how people can only have 3 meals a day with no snacks! And I’m always reaching for the hummus, too — especially homemade — love how gorgeous yours came out!
We love homemade hummus. This looks perfect, Amy!
I’m a huge snacker too! I definitely need to make this and start dipping my carrots in them!
We love this stuff and make it every Sunday – add a roasted jalapeno – so good!
Ooh, love the idea of adding a roasted jalapeno, danielle! I’ll definitely have to try that next time.
I’m a big time snacker too, you are definitely not alone! Your hummus looks amazing, and the pic is great (I can never make it look appetizing)
Looks wonderful! Love hummus. I make a rosemary & lemon variety. I agree, homemade is better than store bought.
I bet your rosemary + lemon hummus is just amazing!
we love homemade hummus too! so tasty & good for you…easy too
Oh! This looks awesome! I just got a new food processor for my birthday (exciting, I know), so I’m dying to try some new things. Seeing as I’ve never tried hummus before, this is just the motivation I needed!
Yay for your new food processor! You are going to LOVE it. And I hope you love this hummus if you try it. =)
I’m a snacker too, and I’d love snacking on this! Homemade is always best.
I love to graze and have nibbles of things – hummus is perfect for that!
I’m a snacker too, could just eat snacks all day. I love a good spicy hummus, it makes a great sandwich spread.
A lot of people suggested that on my Facebook page, too, Jackie – I have to admit that i’ve never used it as a sandwich spread. Must change that ASAP!
Mmmm, I love hummus and bean dips. This look delicious and beautiful. Yummy.
picture perfect!!
Homemade hummus is a perfect snack!
great dip. fantastic for snacking. yum!
I could snack on hummus every day. I love a good basic recipe and then add other things like herbs, roasted red peppers, or jalapenos to add different flavors. This is one of those great basic recipes to keep for many occasions.
Amy,
I have GOT to find tahini so I can make my own. My put up roasted garlic from my garden would be great in it. Alas, it’s too cheap to buy a giant vat at Costco while my son is at sled hockey practice.
My favorite way to use hummus (aside from dipping carrots and Daikon radishes into it) is as a spread on one slice of a grilled cheese sandwich. Yum!
Ooh, what a great idea to put it on grilled cheese – brilliant! I hope you can find tahini somewhere near you – a lot of our specialty/all-natural/gourmet stores sell a big tub for a reasonable price ($5-8). I bet you can find it online if you don’t have a shop that sells it near you!
Who knew Hummus was this easy to make? I love it! I am for sure going to try this soon!
I love hummus! My hubby and I snack on it all the time, but homemade is worlds better than store bought. Amazing recipe, Amy! Saving it to try soon.
Oh hummus, how I love thee….This looks gorgeous Amy!
LOVE homemade hummus. It really is the best and doesn’t compare to store-bought whatsoever!! healthy and delicious snacks are always amazing!
mmm I love hummus and I’m a total snacker too! For some reason I’ve yet to make it at home. Must do this stat.
I’m a total snacker and this is right up my alley. I have never made hummus before – I guess I better try!
Megan + Katie, I had never made it at home either until now – trust me, it’s super easy and SO worth the time!
I need to get on the homemade hummus train! It looks so simple and even more delicious.
I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who snack so often! 😛 This hummus would be perfect anytime I wanted a healthy snack.
I’ve never had hummus. I’m kind of scared of it. :/
But I’m a big snacker! I have to eat something every two hours or I’ll get anxious. Hmm. That sounds pretty bad now that I think of it. Uh, anyway, yay for snacking!
I’m definitely a snacker. I always have been, but now that I’m pregnant, I HAVE to eat every couple of hours or else I want to kill someone! 😉
Homemade hummus is simply the best!
What a great snack it is!
Hummus is my daytime choice of snack! Our cupboards are always stocked with chick peas and olive oil. The homemade hummus is always so much better than the store bought ones. Yay for easy snacks to get us through the day!!!
I always forget how freakin’ easy hummus is. Then I make it and am like what the frick claire, stop buying those tubs!
BAHAHA, exactly! I couldn’t have put it any better myself. =)
I am addicted to hummus and before i used to buy it a lot but lately – i have been making different variations too. its so simple yet delicious. And in case if you dont have tahini- smooth peanut butter also works. For superbowl, I made with navy beans and edamame, it turned out yummmy too.
It’s great to know that you can substitute peanut butter for the tahini. While I don’t always have tahini in the house, I *always* have peanut butter!
Hummus is my number one favorite snack! I literally put it on everything. Recently, I made a Butternut Squash and Tahini spread which was hands downs the best thing since white bread. Here is the recipe in case you want to try it.

thanks for passing on the recipe, Nicole – it looks + sounds SO wonderful!
This is one of the best looking hummus dips I have ever seen! Totally sexy! Like you, I’m a huge snacking fan. I need healthier stuff on my tab!
I love hummus!
ha! i am so with you…eating 3x a day…I am like 6….six small meals don’t want to sound like a total piggy. lol…and i love hummus and I too forget how easy chick peasy this is to make at home…thanks for reminder so i can use up the chick peas I have!
I’m not sure I could only eat 3 times a day… snacks are some of the best foods! This hummus looks super tasty
I have to agree. Although I haven’t made hummus at home yet, it has been different and unique at the restaurants I had it. It was actually my lunch today! So yummy.
I eat hummus all the time but never make my own as often as I would like to. Yours look truly wonderful.
Nothing but homemade hummus is found in the gluttons house, but that is the job of my better half and she’s always tweaking her version for fun. Well done on the images.
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
