Fearless Baby Update!

by Amy on 11 February 2014

I can’t believe I haven’t updated y’all on Fearless Baby since October! She has grown + changed so much since then. For my last update + pictures (newborn through 4 months old), click here.

So, what’s 8-month old Fearless Baby up to these days? Moving, constantly! Unless she’s sleeping, she is always in motion — barrel-rolling, scooting, bouncing, dancing to music, or rocking on her hands + knees, *almost* crawling. She’s very vocal these days, making lots of ma-ma-ma + ba-ba-ba sounds. And she’s eating solid food – she’s tried lots of fruits + veggies, but her favorite food thus far is Greek yogurt – the more tart, the better. And bread! Give her a baguette + she’s happy for hours.

We have a solid schedule that we follow every day, which pleases the super-organized me immensely. =) In between her morning and afternoon nap, we have a 3-4-hour awake block, + we almost always go out + socialize during that time — we go to Kindermusik, storytime at the library, lunches + coffee with friends, or run errands. And every evening, in the hour before we start her bedtime routine, I put her in her doorway jumper in the kitchen, and she bounces, laughs + watches me prep dinner. It’s one of my favorite times of the day, as I get to combine my two favorite hobbies — cooking, and spending quality time with my sweet little daughter.

If you love baby updates, you can follow me on instagram and twitter, where I post lots about the little lady. I’ll do another Baby update here in 4 months, when she’ll be *gasp* ONE YEAR OLD!

Would love to know more hou your schedule and how you did it. I have a 6-week old and am looking forward to a routine to start in the next few months.

She’s perfect!

Hi Heather, congrats on your 6-week-old! I’ll try to summarize our schedule and how we did it, without boring you. =)

First, I didn’t attempt any sort of schedule until she was about 6-8 weeks old. Until then, I let her both eat and nap on demand (which meant that she was eating every 3-4 hours during the day, and usually just once during the middle of the night, around 2 or 3 AM).

I used an app to track her eating/sleeping/diaper activity every day, pretty much from day 1, and when I started to see a pattern emerge, I basically encouraged her to keep following it. Meaning, I noticed that she was roughly eating at the same times each day, and roughly napping at the same times each day, so I would offer her food at the same time every day, and put her down for a nap at the same time every day. Over the course of a week or two, she really took to it, and seemed to eat/sleep even better.

She was on 4 (usually 45 minutes-1.5 hours) naps a day until she was about 4 months old, when she dropped her early nap and reduced down to 3 naps a day. She only stayed on that schedule for a few more weeks, and then dropped down to 2 naps a day, each 1.5 hours long, which is still what she’s doing now.

My goal was to have her on a 12/12 hour schedule, meaning that she’s up for 12 hours a day, asleep at night for 12 hours, but it’s really more like 13/11 for us. Her basic schedule is this: Awake at 5:30 AM. Eats. Plays. Naps 8:30-10 AM. Eats. Plays/we usually get out of the house. Eats. Naps 1:30-3 PM. Eats (solid food). Plays. Bath + bedtime routine start at 6 PM. Eats. Asleep around 6:30 PM for the night.

I know that is probably way more information than you needed/wanted, but I hope it helps! If I could sum up what I’ve learned, I’d say to take note of what your baby is already doing naturally, and encourage her to keep following that same schedule. Chances are patterns in her schedule might naturally be emerging soon.

Congrats again! And let me know if I can help with anything else!

Hi Amy,

Your little girl is just a bundle of sweetness!

Great information that you were passing onto Heather…I was just wondering which app did you use to track the information?

Thank you,

C x

17 amy February 11, 2014 at 4:20 pm

You are so sweet, Clementine – thank you! And glad the info is helpful – I hoped I didn’t get too carried away with details, as I sometimes do! =) The app I use is called Total Baby. It’s about $5, and I *never* pay for apps, but I did for this one because it got such good ratings. It was awesome in the beginning for watching patterns emerge, and I still use it now to track how many ounces she’s eating each day, etc. Here it is! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/total-baby/id312198543?mt=8

Oh My Gah!!! She is so adorable! I can’t believe she is so big. I know everyone tells you this all the time because they always tell me, but time goes by so fast. Believe me, mine will be 5 years old in June. FIVE!!! She will start school in the fall!! WHA?!?!?!? It’s crazy.

27 amy February 12, 2014 at 7:36 pm

Shannon, one of my mom friends told me, “some days can seem long, but the years fly by.” I think that’s the perfect way of summing it up! =) And thank you so much for your kind words. Your little one is beyond cute!
